Welcome and Invitation to Apply for a Presentation

Lausanne and JUNIOR EUROMAT is a symbiosis since the beginning of the conference in 1992, rendering it as the major event for young materials scientists and engineers in Europe. JUNIOR EUROMAT assembles every two years more than 300 Master and PhD students, Post docs and young scientists from all over the world. The 13th JUNIOR EUROMAT conference is for the first time organized by the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Materials Department, Powder Technology Laboratory in close collaboration with FEMS and will be carried out at EPFL from July 10 to 14, 2016. Also for the first time, the Scientific Committee and the Organising Committee are responsible for the content and structure of JUNIOR EUROMAT, adding further value to this unique event.

The conference maintains its scope, covering the many different aspects of materials science and engineering. From 2016 on, the structure will be related to that of the EUROMAT Series with 6 thematic areas:

  1. Functional Materials

  2. Structural Materials

  3. Design, Processing, Manufacturing & Recycling

  4. Energy, Transportation and Environment

  5. Life Science and Health

  6. Modelling and Characterisation

JUNIOR EUROMAT opts to bridge the academic and economic world and has the honour to host prominent plenary speakers from universities, research organisations and industry.

  • Prof. Dr. W. Kaysser, CEO Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Germany

  • Prof. Dr. Silvia Bordiga, Director of NIS Centre of Excellence, University of Torino, Italy

  • Dr. Katalin Balazsi, Institute for Technical Physics and Materials Science,  Budapest, Hungary

  • Prof. Dr. Martin Brunnock, Technical Director at Tata Steel Europe, UK

  • Dr. Elias Hontzopoulos, Vice President of PRIME Laser Technology SA, Keratea, Greece

  • Dr. Andreas Blatter, Director R&D PX Group, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland

The conference is structured in three parallel sessions on Monday and Tuesday, with both short and more extended presentations, together with poster presentations. On Wednesday, the FEMS Lecturer Award Session, the awards for posters and Science Slam and a panel discussion with stakeholders from industry, research and European organisationsare planned.

On Sunday afternoon before the Welcome session and on Thursday, various tutorials will be offered by leading experts to improve knowledge on specific fields like: materials selection, mechanical testing at small scales, powder technology and colloidal systems, critical materials in a sustainable development, how to publish research in high impact factor journals, …

With this new concept Junior EUROMAT 2016 will promote both research and innovation in a synergistic way that 'excellent science' and 'industrial leadership' interact together. The conference like the EUROMAT Series fosters the exchange of information and knowledge in face-to-face discussions at poster panels and industrial stands, at coffee breaks and at a barbecue.

This year, a special session called “Science Slam” invites young investigators to present their research in a theatrics part in combination with the barbecue. We hope many young investigators will apply for such a presentation.
