2024 FEMS Master Thesis Award takes place at FEMS Junior EUROMAT in Manchester, UK
The 7th FEMS Master Thesis Award final took place on Wednesday 6 July during FEMS EUROMAT 2023
A record-breaking 9 finalists from Italy, Greece, Spain, France, Sweden, Portugal and the UK, all winners of their own national finals, gave a 10-minute presentation in from of a full audience on their chosen topics.
Oliver Preuß of DGM won first place for her presentation on Dislocation-Based Toughening in Single-Crystal KNbO3. On his win Oliver said, 'Coming from a small developing research field, dislocations in ceramics, I felt honoured to represent DGM and Germany at the 2024 FEMS Master Thesis Award final. Thank you to the organizers for hosting FEMS Junior EUROMAT, an exceptional conference filled with valuable networking opportunities. When it came to the competition, it felt like speaking in front of friends rather than strangers'.
Asst Prof Anna Zervaki, FEMS Immediate Past President and Chair of the judging panel along with Prof Aldo R Boccaccini (FEMS President) and Dr Kate Thornton (IOM3 President) agreed that once again the standard of presentations was extremely high and the decision was not easy.
Second place went to Inès Addi (SF2M) with her presentation on Grain boundaries engineering in TWIP Ti alloys for enhanced mechanical properties and third to Sara Scolari (AIM) for Agglomeration of integrated cycle steel plant by-products through several organic binders.

The FEMS Master Thesis Award recognises the best Master Thesis on Materials Science and Engineering is presented annually by the FEMS Member Societies.
Following the 2023 FEMS Awards review, from 2024 the top-3 finalists will be receiving cash prizes.
Details on the 2025 FEMS Master Thesis Award edition will be published on the website in October and the next final will be held during 2025 FEMS EUROMAT in Granada, Spain.
