The Portuguese Materials Society (SPM) invites the materials science community to celebrate World Materials Day, an annual event highlighting the crucial role of materials in scientific and technological advancement.
This year's theme, "New Materials, New Horizons," will feature inspiring lectures, presentations, and recognitions of excellence in materials science.

Maria Manuela Oliveira Prize
The Portuguese Materials Society (SPM) is dedicated to recognizing excellence in technological innovation and scientific research within materials science. To this end, the SPM Board established the Maria Manuela Oliveira Prize in May 2019 to highlight the crucial role women play in research, development, innovation, technology transfer, and education in materials science in Portugal. This prize also aims to promote gender equality in these fields.
About Maria Manuela Oliveira:
Maria Manuela Oliveira is a highly regarded engineer and Ph.D. with a robust background in materials research and development. Her work has had a lasting impact in the field, and she has contributed significantly to SPM from its inception to the present, serving as the organization’s general secretary.
Through this prize, SPM seeks to honor the dedication and contributions of women who have distinguished themselves in one or more of SPM’s areas of interest.
The life and contributions of Maria Manuela Oliveira serve as a living testament to the value of commitment to materials science and the SPM, providing inspiration and encouragement for more women to pursue careers in this field.
Awarded biennially on World Materials Day in even-numbered years, the Maria Manuela Oliveira Prize celebrates its recipients nominated by the SPM Board.
