This morning’s opening session welcomed participants to Trikala for a week of scientific exchange and networking.

Prof. Alexis Kermanidis and Conference Co-Chair Prof. Abílio M. P. de Jesus welcomed attendees, with special thanks to the Mayor of Trikala for the city’s support in hosting the conference. FEMS President Prof. Paula Vilarinho highlighted the strategic importance of materials research in Europe and the vital role of young researchers in shaping the future of the field. She also thanked the Hellenic Metallurgical Society (HMS) for hosting FEMS Junior EUROMAT 2026 and reaffirmed FEMS’ commitment to supporting the next generation of materials scientists.

The ceremony concluded with a moving tribute to Brett Suddell, followed by a minute of silence in recognition of his invaluable contributions to FEMS.
