Society Profile
The Spanish Society of Materials (SOCIEMAT) was founded in 1996 to bring together the diverse activities of research groups across Spain working in the field of Materials Science and Engineering. The Society’s mission is to foster and promote research, technological development, and innovation within this dynamic and multidisciplinary field. SOCIEMAT actively works to strengthen connections between academia, industry, and society through a wide range of initiatives, including scientific events, professional networks, educational programs, specialized groups, and outreach activities.
The Society is a member of international and national organizations such as FEMS (Federation of European Materials Societies), COSCE (Confederation of Spanish Scientific Societies), and EFC (European Federation of Corrosion). It also maintains collaborative agreements with other Spanish and Ibero-American scientific societies to promote the exchange of knowledge and foster international cooperation.
SOCIEMAT encourages community building and professional development through its specialized working groups, also promotes scientific knowledge through its electronic publication “Material-ES”, and it organizes numerous events aimed at both professionals and the general public. The flagship event is the Spanish National Congress on Materials (CNMAT), held biennially for more than 25 years, bringing together researchers, industry professionals, and students to discuss the latest advances in Materials Science.
In addition, SOCIEMAT recognizes excellence through a broad awards program, which includes prizes for outstanding undergraduate and master’s projects and scientific careers. The Society is also strongly committed to science outreach from an early age, collaborating in the Materland project, which aims to introduce young students to the fascinating world of Materials Science through engaging and educational activities. SOCIEMAT is also actively involved in the celebration of the World Materials Day, promoting awareness and appreciation of Materials Science among the wider public.”
Through its comprehensive range of activities, SOCIEMAT plays a central role in advancing the field of Materials Science and Engineering in Spain, inspiring future generations of scientists and engineers, and contributing to global scientific progress.
