Society Profile

The Hellenic Metallurgical Society (HMS) was founded in 2000 by a team of 20 experts from academia and industry, aiming to promote the science and technology of metallic materials in Greece and beyond.

Every three years, HMS organizes its National Conference, hosted in rotation among the cities of Athens, Volos, Thessaloniki, Ioannina, and Patras. Since 2023, this event has evolved into an International Conference in Patras, with the upcoming edition set to take place in Thessaloniki in 2025.

HMS has played a leading role in advancing international collaboration in materials science. Notably, it organized the EUROMAT 2017 European Congress & Exhibition on Advanced Materials in Thessaloniki, attracting over 2,500 participants from 65 countries, under the presidency (2017–2019) of Prof. N. Michailidis (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki).

Looking ahead, HMS will host the FEMS Junior EUROMAT 2026 in Trikala, Greece, continuing its commitment to fostering the next generation of materials scientists. Also several Workshops have also been organised. Among them are:

– Workshop on Computational Alloy Thermodynamics, Volos, 2002

– Workshop on Mechanical Behaviour of Metallic Materials, Patras, 2005

– Workshop on Surface Engineering Technologies, Athens, 2006

– Workshop on ‘Combination of metallic-ceramic materials in technological applications,’ Ioannina 2009

– Workshop on “Advanced Methods of Simulation and Characterization of Metallic Materials”, Kalamata, Greece, 2025

The mission of HMS is to promote science and engineering concerned with metallic materials in Greece. The objectives of HMS are:

– The advancement of science and technology of metallic materials and metallurgy
– The cooperation between scientists, academics, researchers, engineers, and industrialists who are actively involved in the field of metallic materials and metallurgy
– The exchange and dissemination of knowledge in the field of metallurgical science
– The contribution to the improvement of Greek education in the area of metallic materials and metallurgy
– The promotion of metallurgical science in Greece
– The representation of the Greek metallurgical (scientific and engineering) community in relevant international societies
– Intensification of the co-operation between universities, research institutions, and industry.
