On 12 March, the Department of Materials Engineering and Ceramics (DEMAC) at the University of Aveiro hosted a successful event celebrating the International Day of Ceramics, bringing together students, researchers, and representatives from the ceramics sector.
The initiative was organised by SPM members Inês Vilarinho, José Carlos Almeida (President of the Portuguese Society of Ceramics and Glass), João Lopes Miranda, and Camila Ribeiro, all affiliated with CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, in collaboration with CAD–CICECO and the Materials Students’ Group of the Academic Association of the University of Aveiro (AAUAv).
The event aimed to highlight the importance of ceramics while strengthening the connection between academia and industry.
The programme featured an exhibition of ceramic works and research projects developed by members of the academic community, showcasing the diversity, innovation, and creativity within the field.
A central highlight of the event was a round table discussion addressing professional pathways, innovation, and current challenges in the ceramics sector. The panel brought together speakers from both academia and industry: Inês Rondão (CTCV – Centre for Technology of Ceramics and Glass), João Carvalheiras (Grestel – Ceramic Products), Maria Martins (Sanindusa), Diogo Lopes (University of Aveiro), Henrique Vieira (MSc student, University of Aveiro), and Simão Santos (PhD student, University of Aveiro).
The discussion fostered a dynamic exchange of perspectives and was followed by an engaging Q&A session with the audience.
The event drew approximately 50 participants, creating a lively and interactive atmosphere that reflected the strong interest of students and early-career researchers in the future of ceramics and related industries.
The success of this first edition highlights the importance of initiatives that connect academia, industry, and students. It sets a strong foundation for future celebrations of the International Day of Ceramics.
