In Memoriam – Dr Brett Suddell

21 Apr 2026

The Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS) community is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Brett Suddell, former FEMS President (2016–2017), who passed away on 25 March 2026.

Dr Suddell was a highly respected materials scientist and engineer, widely recognised for his expertise in natural materials and sustainable solutions. As Founder and Director of BioBased Solutions Ltd, he worked at the interface of science, industry, and policy, advising organisations across the globe, including international bodies such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the Common Fund for Commodities.

A committed and active member of the materials community, Dr Suddell dedicated many years of service to FEMS, representing the IOM3 for over eight years and later serving as Vice President and President. During his presidency, he contributed significantly to strengthening collaboration within the European materials network and advancing FEMS’ mission of promoting materials science and engineering across Europe.

Beyond FEMS, Dr Suddell was a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and a Chartered Environmentalist. His long-standing involvement with IOM3 included roles such as Senior Vice President, Honorary Overseas Secretary, Council member, and Trustee. He also played an important role in supporting early-career professionals and fostering community engagement within the field.

Dr Suddell’s scientific contributions were equally impactful. His work in bio-based and sustainable materials led to numerous publications, invited keynote and plenary lectures, and editorial roles in leading journals, including the Journal of Biobased Materials and BioEnergy and the Journal of Green Materials. His research and advocacy helped advance the understanding and application of natural materials in engineering and industry.

Those who had the privilege of working with Brett will remember not only his professional achievements but also his enthusiasm, generosity, and commitment to collaboration. He was a strong advocate for interdisciplinary work and for building bridges between academia, industry, and policy.

On behalf of the entire FEMS community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.

Dr Brett Suddell will be greatly missed, and his legacy will continue to inspire the materials community.
